January Reflections + Choosing Your WORD for 2018

Monthly I attend an online women's circle called The Fearless Mom Circle which was created by Dani Kenney and she is such an amazing hostess! Not only is she an awesome online circle leader but she is also an incredible business coach and I know first hand for both! The reason I'm brining this up is because these circles always get me thinking. The topics always get me thinking about juicy and deep things. Now sometimes I don't always go super deep because maybe I'm just not feeling it but more often than not I'm always digging into some juicy stuff. The kind of stuff that sometimes isn't fun to talk about. Tonight was no different.

In tonights Fearless Mom Circle we were asked to talk about our word for the year and how we are committed to it and how has it challenged us. For me, my word is RADIANT! This word has been the driver for so much positive change in my life already in one month! That is the power of choosing a word my friends! I know I'm using a lot of exclamation points but I'm serious. Words are POWERFUL. They ARE power actually. You may or may not know much about manifestation and The Law of Attraction but those concepts are deeply rooted in the power of our words!

I recently learned more about how if you think something that's good. It gets the ball rolling so to speak. If you say it out loud you are granting it even more power and the Universe can really hear you. If you write it while saying it you are amplifying the power even more because now you've included movement. Think about the vibrational energy you're creating by stating out loud and writing down your word. When you say your word I also think it's best to start it with I AM! Dani actually introduced me to the I AM meditation and woah let me tell you that shit was powerful!! More on that in another post!

For me my commitment to my word has been almost daily. I look at my vision board daily which includes my word along with images that make me FEEL Radiant too and it gives me so much clarity. My commitment also comes in the form of my business. I recently rebranded which I need to do a formal announcement for. Whoops! But my business is now Radiant Healing + Mineralism. That is how committed I am to feeling radiant. I want my clients to feel RADIANT too! And energetically it just feel so fucking right! I've also got my podcast called The Radiant Entrepreneur where I interview heart-centered female entrepreneurs and discuss other health, wellness and lifestyle topics. This also allows me to stay committed to my word. As an intuitive healer and coach I use my skills as a healer to also help coach new and aspiring female entrepreneurs. All of this keeps me committed to my word, and I AM RADIANT!

I honestly feel like I've been tested for longer than the last month. Really well before I chose the word. I would have ideas and try different things but nothing stuck. I think the reason nothing stuck was because I didn't really want it to. I knew I was meant for more and I was meant to bring love and light to the world but up until this month I was fighting it. I wasn't stepping into my power. Every time I'd get an idea to try something it never felt right but I'd go full steam ahead and then something would happen and I'd be reminded this isn't what you want. This isn't what you should be doing. It's hard to listen to your soul sometimes when you've spent so much of your life ignoring and pushing it aside. What I've learned is I can't do that anymore. I am 100% committed to this path and to stepping into my power as a healer and as a woman deeply connected to the Divine Feminine!

If you're feeling lost the good news is it's only January 31st! You have the rest of the year to live every day the way you want to show up in the world. The best way to start is to choose a word. Some, like myself, choose 3-5 words with one being the main focus and using the others as guiding posts.  I recently wrote an e-book that takes you through a journaling process to choose your word in addition to exploring your uniqueness and creating a big vision for your life and business. That will be released soon to all of my subscribers and those who subscribe in the future so if you're wanting go through this exercise and need a little guidance you can always subscribe and you will be the first to get your hands on my e-book called Embody Her - The Radiant Entrepreneur.

Plus!!! I have a special announcement that you'll read about at the end!

Diane Morgan

She works with women who are overwhelmed and torn by the aging process and have a hard time finding themselves and their place in life during and beyond midlife. She is the creator of a powerful transformational program Awaken Your Beauty Inside Out: Fall In Love With The Skin You’re In. This phenomenal program capitalizes on her 20 plus years of experience in the beauty industry and her expertise as a certified Master Empowerment Coach for women.

Diane Morgan.jpg
With nearly thirty years of professional experience working with women, I have seen and heard criticism in all its shapes, sizes and forms. From a women’s clothing boutique that I owned and operated to aesthetics where my background is too, women relentlessly and ruthlessly beat themselves up, especially as they age.
Seeing that our society revolves around youth, there is not much out there for aging women to relate to. The longing for lost youth can become either an obsession to hang on to. Or vise versa, feeling confident, vibrant, sensual and at home in the skin we were born into, becomes a completely lost cause. I haven’t yet decided which one is worse...

Ritual + Personal Growth
Ritual + Personal Growth.png

Earlier this week I published a podcast episode about rituals and personal growth. It’s been my most listened to episode yet! I hope you take a listen if you haven’t already and please hit that SUBSCRIBE button!

I decided to also publish an article on the topic because that is how important rituals are becoming in my life and business and I want to make sure for those who aren’t into podcasts or don’t really care to listen and prefer to read can enjoy the content as well.

What is a ritual? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as below;

Definition of ritual

  1. : of or relating to rites or a ritual : ceremonial a ritual dance
  2. : according to religious law ritual purity
  3. : done in accordance with social custom or normal protocol ritual handshakes ritual background checks

As you can see the majority of how it’s defined is as a religious rite. And I agree there is a place for ritual in your spiritual practice and I do this as well but I really prefer this definition from the book Slow Beauty written by Shel Pink, founder of SpaRitual and

“Modes trough which we access our self, our inner life, & pathways to making a greater, more intimate connection to our self.  We use rituals so that we don’t travel too far off of the path away from ourself. Ritual ground us and give shape to our days, our weeks, our months, and our years…. Rituals are a path to self-transformation.”

I prefer this definition because it’s really talking about using rituals in our day to day life actually bring us closer to our innermost selves. We are able to create a deep and intimate connection with ourself by creating these rituals. To me that is way more important than worrying about doing a ritual in my spiritual practice. As I said before I do also do that but right now I think it’s important to think about it in the terms of how doing this daily brings about greater personal growth.

You might be thinking…why am I talking about rituals and how they relate to personal growth? Well, because they are important! And, for me they are both critical to living better lives. Rituals are important for our mental, physical and spiritual health. It doesn’t matter if you practice any religion, as many people I think associate ritual with religion, you just have to want to connect with yourself and have a desire to live a better more whole-hearted life. By creating rituals you are allowing yourself to grow as a person which allows you to again live more whole-heartedly and be more conscious of the role you play in the world.

A ritual doesn’t have to be this really grandiose thing. Yes, they can be complex but they can also be very simple. I would argue to say that the simple rituals are the ones that will have the most lasting impact. Keeping them simple will set you up for success with doing them regularly. Start out too big and more than likely you won’t stick with it. The key with rituals is consistency. The ritual can change as it should especially as you grow in your practice. Because if you think about it…let’s say you do an energetic release every full moon. It may seem like a one time thing but you are actually doing it constantly every month however the manner in which you do it may change. Plus as you keep up with your practice of doing rituals regularly you may find yourself researching rituals online which will allow you to adapt yours to better fit your growing needs. Plus it’s fun to change things up!

As I was doing research to prepare for my podcast on this very topic I came across this article called, “The Importance of Rituals,” by James Mapes. In the article he says,

“In Harvard, professor/author Dr. Ben-Shahar’s highly popular course in Positive Psychology, he teaches students how to be happy. One of his Eleven Happiness Tips is to create rituals. He notes that ‘The most creative individuals whether artist, businesspeople or parents have rituals that they follow. This routine frees them up to be creative and spontaneous.’”

You can find the article here:

James Mapes is a business speaker on the imagination and leadership. He is the author of, “Quantum Leap Thinking: An Owner's GuidetotheMind.”

You see by creating these rituals and doing them routinely you are actually setting yourself up for greater success. Because as Dr. Ben-Shahar states you are providing your soul freedom for creativity and to be spontaneous. I need more spontaneity! Also, think back to the definition from Shel Pink where she says by having rituals we will transform ourselves. Transforming ourselves leads to greater personal growth.

I know a lot of people, myself included, who are always doing personal development which to me is the same as personal growth…you do the development to grow. By creating rituals in our lives we become better humans! And as we work on our personal development that makes us grow as a person which also leads to being a better human. Rituals and Personal Growth go hand in hand. Plus, the best part is it’s not for anyone but yourself. This is to me the epitome of self-love. Will others benefit from your new found awesomeness? Sure, of course, but creating rituals is all about my journey. My self-love, my growth. Not anyone else. They are just lucky to get the aftereffects from all that juicy goodness!

If you pick up Shel Pink’s book, “Slow Beauty,” she actually gives you rituals you can practice which I want to start incorporating some she mentions. I love the idea of the morning, afternoon and third light concepts. These to me would be so powerful because I already feel so connected to the moon and the sky, mother earth really, that I think doing this practice of being in the first light and noon-light etc. would have a profound affect on my mood, my mind and overall wellbeing.

As I prepared for this topic, because I’ll be honest, in my mind ritual was more related to my spiritual practices I realized that I’ve already started implementing a ritual in my morning routine. Starting about in mid-December, my friend, mentor and coach, Dani Kenney, mentioned reading first thing in the morning rather than looking at her phone to start her day off right. She said it made a huge difference for her so I wanted to try it. She is such an inspirational person and has such amazing energy I thought if Dani is doing it I need to try it!

I was hesitant the first day because I run an online business where I easily get in the trap that is my phone. I worry what if I miss a question or comment or whatever, you know. Well, I want to break that. I want to believe I can run this business and not be on my phone at 5am. What I have been doing is the first thing I do after checking the time and/or making coffee, if my husband hasn’t already done it, is I read. My son is usually cuddled up next to me watching his morning cartoon, drinking his chocolate cashew milk and eating a banana while I sip my coffee and read. This lasts anywhere from 10-30 min or more. It mostly depends on how long he let’s me have my “me time” and sometimes my husband plays with him so I can have more which is awesome. After reading I usually fill in my Desire Map Planner for the day from Danielle LaPorte…if I’m not making coffee sometimes I fill this in before I read. I’m not that strict I guess with my ritual. I really like reading my Core Desired Feelings at the start of each day. It really helps me start my day focused on how I want to feel. From that point the rest of the day is pretty flexible. My morning ritual is very short in comparison to what others may do but it works for me and I imagine it will evolve as I continue on this path of incorporating more rituals into my life.

I have already started feeling the positive affects of doing this so I have no plans of stopping. I’m thinking of other things I can add in or other rituals I can put in place. I also try to do a really simple and easy ritual for the full and new moons. I try to always release something on the full moon and set intentions on the new moon. I don’t do the same thing each time, meaning sometimes I pull cards and sometimes I don’t. But the act of just doing these small acts and relaxing into the moments has been providing my soul something it needed that I didn’t realize was missing.

If I can leave you with one thing it would be don’t be afraid to start. Don’t let the word ritual intimidate you. It doesn’t have to be complicated. I honestly think morning or evenings is the easiest time of day to start making rituals a part of your life. For me personally it was morning because it sets the tone for the day. For you maybe it’s nighttime because sleep is so important. Pick one thing you will do each night that fills your internal cup! If it’s helpful call it a routine but don’t forget the sacredness of what you’re doing. I use the term sacred intentionally because you are showing yourself love and commitment and you need to honor that and the act of doing that is sacred. You are doing these rituals or routines with a purpose and for me combing something sacred, the act of practicing self love, with intention and consistency makes it a ritual. I personally love the word ritual! I think it’s juicy, as if I’m channeling the divine feminine and plus it makes me feel like a goddess!

So just remember these three things…for any ritual remember to do it with intention, make it sacred to you, and do it consistently. Start small and let it evolve and grow as you evolve and grow. As you learn of other peoples rituals you may want to try sometime new and if you do and it doesn't feel good don’t do it the next day. Only do what feels good to you because this is your sacred ritual for making you feel amazing!

Enjoy making magic in your daily life!

NYE 2017 & The Radiant Entrepreneur Podcast Launches January 2nd

I've been pretty quiet lately and I'm sorry for that but I'm realizing sometimes you just have to listen to what your mind and body need. Mine needed to step back for a few and regroup over the holidays. Plus I had some stuff come up that I had to work through and sometimes you can't just work through it quickly. Time is often needed but we don't always want to give it and I really felt it was important to give the time to what I had going on.

With that said it's NYE 2017 and I wish I could say I am hitting the town and painting it red but the truth is it's just me and my little family and our friends and their little family. We are probably not staying up until midnight and will spend the evening eating baked treats and enjoying conversation. Which this year to last year is so different but I feel this is the way it needed to be this year so I'm grateful I get to celebrate at all!

2017 was hard for so many people, myself included, and I have hope that 2018 is going to be the best year yet for us all! I have faith that everything that has happened needed to happen so I could really step into my truth in 2018. Will it be easy? Hell no, but I think I'm ready. I am ready to embody all of my core desired feelings and I will be sharing the rest of those in a separate post. My plan to share them one by one got a little derailed but you know what you just roll with it! Why worry so damn much! I'm so tired of worry! Tonights the full moon and I'm releasing worry. I don't want it in why life anymore!

What are you releasing tonight as you head into the New Year? How great is it that NYE falls on a Full Moon! And a SUPER Full Moon at that! It's fucking awesome that's what it is! Well I don't want this to become a lengthy post but I just wanted you all to know I appreciate you! I appreciate your support and love and light you've brought to my life! And if we haven't met yet you are still bringing those things to my life just by reading this. Thank you!

Oh and before I go the most important thing I wanted to share about is my podcast, The Radiant Entrepreneur, launches January 2nd! I probably should have started with this but you time. The podcast is focused on highlighting female entrepreneurs who are conscious & heart-centered. I really want to share their journeys as Radiant Entrepreneurs and discuss topics from health & wellness, business to various lifestyle topics!

I've got a great lineup of amazing women I've interviewed and it kicks off with yours truly, a topic on Fear & Mindset with Angie da Rosa and an interview with Bailey Yeats! There is so much more amazing juiciness that is coming so please click this link and then click the Subscribe button! It will make my heart sing knowing you support me and you will learn so much!

Committed to Change & Feeling FREE!

Committed to change sounds so ominous without context. What kind of change exactly? For me change lately has been running rampant everywhere. It seems when I've thought I've got something figured out it, well, changes. I can't say for sure it's a bad thing but it can make it hard when you're trying to launch a business. I finally feel like I'm really starting to get that side of me nailed down but never say never right!.

When you're on a spiritual and personal journey change can happen often and I'm no stranger to it. Honestly I think it's what I like best about life. It's a constant ebb and flow and ever changing. There may be a time when I really lock myself in to something but for now as it relates to my business and me I'm going to go with the flow. I want to feel FREE and for me that looks like changing direction when I feel like I need to and right now I'm changing the direction of me.

The change of direction regarding me, myself, is related to the title of this post. I'm committing myself to change. It's a change of direction because lately I have put my physical and internal health on the back burner. This is not something I ever recommend but for me it happened and I'm not proud of it. I'm not at my ideal anything right now and it fucking sucks and I'm over it. I'm over feeling like shit! Feeling like shit does not feel FREE!

Copy of Bliss.png

What does this mean exactly? Well it means I'm committing right now to making changes to live a healthier life. I started today with a meditation which led me to this decision. The truth is I want to get back to how healthy I felt a few years ago. I felt so good and I was eating great and exercising regularly. I want to get back to that girl. And now it's even better because I'm a mom! I can show Ethan what it means to live a healthy life. I'm not giving up my wine though...yet. Because I mean wine and parenting kind of go together for me right now lol! That and coffee! I am not giving up coffee but I will be giving up the flavored lattes at Starbucks because man the calories are insane and the amount of sugar is ridiculous!

Here it is, my online and public declaration of my commitment to myself to changing my lifestyle. I know I can do this. I've done it before! The only difference this time is I'm a mom to a toddler. I know my biggest struggle will be emotional eating of junk food. If you have suggestions on how to avoid that I'm all ears! I'll be joining the YMCA too to help me on the fitness side and I get 2 hours of childcare with each visit so I can focus on self-care and if I have time maybe a little work in.

Wish me luck and I'll be posting pretty regularly updates here about my journey to help keep myself accountable.

My LOVE for Danielle LaPorte & Desire Map Panning

I'm happy to report that I have just finished taking myself through the Desire Map process and I have found my Core Desired Feelings for 2018! The cool thing about your CDFs which I'll call them from here on out is they can change. You can sit on them for a bit and if one or more doesn't resonate with you anymore you can adjust them. As Danielle LaPorte always says "it should feel good," so if it doesn't change it. I will be posting my words for 2018 over the next couple weeks. I'm letting them sit with me for a bit. I can confirm that AUTHENTIC made it over from 2017!

That was really my only word for 2017; it was that important to me to feel that way. I had been someone else, anyone else, for so long it was critical that I finally be ME! The truest me I could be. When you've spent most of your life being who you think everyone wants you to be it becomes, to be dramatic, life or death to finally be who you truly are! And let me tell you it FEELS fucking amazing to be me! I don't know why I waited so long to do this! I guess I just needed Danielle in my life to help inspire me to take control of my life. She has been my inspiration for the last 2 years and through her Fire Starter Series I met my amazing business coach Dani Kenney!  Dani has become not only my coach but a dear friend and I finally get to meet her in January in person and I can't fucking wait!

That's what is so amazing about Danielle's programs. They bring you not only closer and more connected to you and your truth but they connect you to other people all around the world! I love and believe in her programs and products so much that I have decided to become an affiliate for her. An affiliate means that I earn a small commission on any products you purchase through my link which is: Shop Danielle LaPorte Programs & Products

When you use this link to shop her programs and products you help me provide the life I want for me and my family! Plus, her planners and other items make amazing Christmas gifts! Why wouldn't you want to pick up a couple items! And, hey, while you're at it get something for yourself too! You deserve it and it will FEEL GOOD!

Diana Lynch

This word GRATITUDE has been showing up a lot for me lately. I didn't quite understand at first...I mean I know what it means but I figured it was just because of the holidays but beyond just being the word and posts about it I am experiencing it. Now, I'm not trying to sound like an asshole who has never experienced gratitude but let's just say it wasn't something I really practiced on a regular basis. That however has started changing recently.

Now that I have been out of my depression episode for a couple weeks I am much more conscious of what I'm thankful for. I have been much more mindful of my gratitude and trying to be more aware of the things that make me feel that way. I am not perfect and there are days that I don't feel it at all. Those are usually days that I am having a depressive episode. Living with depression never fully goes away but I'm learning more and more to not let it control me.

grat·i·tude: ˈɡradəˌt(y)o͞od/noun: gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Today was an exceptional day for me and feeling gratitude for my life. If you know me you know I have a lot going on and I am making changes that means I have less time for "me" and I'm ok with that. A week or so ago I would have been freaking out a little at the thought of taking my son out of his two days a week in daycare to be home full time. This weekend though my husband and I have been taking about it and it just makes sense for where we are in life right now.

This has a big impact to our life because I won't have as much free time to focus on my business but I know so many moms that make it work that I know I can too! Even better I woke up this morning feeling so good about the decision. I felt so grateful that I will have this opportunity to be home with my son and watch his little personality to continue to develop. It will be an adjustment and i don't expect it to be easy but I know that it is best for our family right now. I also know I can still be successful in my business and will do whatever I have to to make my dreams reality.

I know it doesn't come easy for all of us and I'm the first to admit it for myself but if you can, take a moment today to reflect on what you have to be thankful for. Practice gratitude and see how your mood changes. It is worth it and something I plan to work at everyday because it feels amazing.

Childbirth education is the foundation you need in preparation for the birth of your child. No one can predict what will happen in labor and birth; but we can educate ourselves about it! We can learn about what our options are in different scenarios so we can make well informed decisions. Emotions run high when you're in labor and you can often get into a state often called "labor land" which makes it difficult to make decisions you haven't already thought about.

My job as an educator will be to help you learn all you want to know about childbirth and answer any questions that pop up. Knowledge is power! Go into birth with confidence knowing you took all the necessary steps to prepare for the birth of your baby. Regardless of how you give birth you will have the tools you need to make the decisions that are best for you and your family.

In addition to childbirth education hiring a doula, like myself,  is a wonderful way to boost your confidence when it comes to birth! As a doula I provide my clients with unwavering support during you pregnancy, birth and early postpartum. I know how scary childbirth can be and I do everything within my power to make sure your environment is calming and make sure you feel loved, heard and confident!

If your looking for an experience when it comes to the birth of your child check out my unique package, The Art of Birthing! I have combined my unique expertise, sound healing and doula services, to bring you the most relaxing and powerful birth package on the market!

Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month - Angie & Trevor's Story

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month and I wanted to honor those families that have experienced loss. Especially those who have had the unfortunate experience of a miscarriage. In itself that is awful but unfortunately society makes it worse by downplaying how one should feel after. My goal is to bring an awareness that miscarriage is just as heartbreaking as any other loss by a mother and should be treated as such.

Asher being held by his big sister Piper!

Asher being held by his big sister Piper!

Today we honor Angie & Trevor Foley's story. We honor their second child who is no longer with us. I met Angie and Trevor while she was pregnant with their rainbow baby and third child who is now a few weeks old! Angie is one of the strongest women I've ever met and I'm so thankful to know her and am so grateful I have this platform to share her story.

Angie & Trevor's Story:

We have a beautiful 4 year old daughter who we luckily had no trouble conceiving and the thought of loss never crossed our minds when we got pregnant. Last year we decided to try for a second child and again, luckily after just 3 months of trying we got our positive pregnancy test and we were so excited! At 5 or 6 weeks I started to notice that I didn't feel pregnant boobs didn't hurt like they did with my first pregnancy and I just felt different. At 7 weeks I started to cramp. I told myself it was just normal pregnancy pains. Then I started to spot...must just be implantation bleeding. Then I woke up to a lot of blood. When I went to the bathroom there was a clot and I knew it. My heart broke into a thousand pieces and I cried like I never have before. Driving to the hospital was such a surreal experience. My husband had convinced himself it was normal bleeding and we'd be OK but I felt so empty. When we arrived at the hospital I couldn't even tell the nurse what was wrong. I started to talk and choked on the words. How could this be happening? What did I do wrong? We waited forever and then went in for an ultrasound. The tech of course couldn't say anything but it was obvious. Another 2 agonizing hours and it was confirmed, the sac was empty.  We went home and cried and cried and cried some more.

As nature continued to take its course I was reminded every time I went to the bathroom that we had lost our baby. I finally stopped bleeding 2 weeks later and went to the doctor for a cyst I had discovered. Low and behold I had a positive pregnancy test! My hcg levels had already gone down to zero so it appeared I was pregnant again! Weekly blood tests however showed I had either lost another baby or had an issue with my hormones. Either way it brought back so much pain. Every day with prayer and unending love and support from family and friends we healed a little more. It's not a pain you ever get just starts to look differently.

September 19th we welcomed our rainbow baby, Asher into the world and when I kiss him, I know I'm sending my love also to his sibling in heaven. Within 3 months of my miscarriage I watched 2 friends and 2 family members also lose babies. My heart aches for anyone who experiences this loss but I remain hopeful that everyone will get their rainbows.

Reading their story my heart aches for them. I share Angie's sentiments' my heart aches for all mothers who have experienced loss. I hope that reading this gives you strength to share your story or at the least let you know you're not alone. I hope more women will share their stories because you never know who you will help.

If you feel called to share your story I would love to share it here. If you're uncomfortable we can even do it anonymously. I really think the more we share the more we can make it known that loss is loss for every family. How you lose a child doesn't make it any less real and painful. You can email me at and I will share in one of my upcoming posts.

Congratulations Angie & Trevor on your rainbow baby!

How to Overcome The Top 5 Fears Surrounding Childbirth
  1. Fear of having a c-section (cesarean birth)

A cesarean birth can often, but not always, be avoided if it’s not wanted. Sometimes there are emergencies that make it a non-negotiable. The more you learn about what can cause this the more likely you’ll be free to have a vaginal delivery.

  1. Fear of unwanted interventions

Many can be avoided with learning why are they used. There are situations where you may still need one but if you don’t know what the different types of interventions are and why they are used it can be difficult to advocate for yourself. And, just because you have one intervention does not mean you will have another.

  1. Fear of getting an epidural

This is a very personal decision and is completely optional. The only time it becomes not an option is when you need a c-section. Otherwise, it comes down to your pain tolerance. Now you may want an epidural and still be afraid and that’s ok. I encourage you to read about the procedure and talk about it with your care provider.

  1. Fear of not being able to handle the pain

The good news is not everyone describes childbirth as painful. This is another very individual experience. Learning about coping techniques is a great place to start to help ease this fear. Breath work, positions, movement and vocalization are all great options. The more prepared you are the more likely you’ll be able to get into the zone and get through it . Every person’s tolerance is different and the best you can do is educate yourself on your medical and non-medical options.

  1. Fear of the unknown

This is probably one of the biggest fears. Education is the best way to move past this and feel more confident. Don’t be afraid to ask questions from your doula or your care provider they are here to help you! The more you know about something the less you will fear it.

Overcoming fear of childbirth looks different for everyone. No one likes to talk about interventions or emergency situations but it’s important to at least have a basic understanding. In the event this happens the last thing you want is to have to make a decision about something you know nothing about.

Learning about what to expect during childbirth is the easiest way to help reduce your fears. It’s especially important to make sure you understand not only what you want out of your birth but the potential interventions that may be needed. Birth is unpredictable, and the best way to prepare for that is education. Just because you read or heard something can happen does not mean it will. What it does mean is you will be prepared to make decisions as needed. This ensures you can stay calm, present and confident!

Muscle Memory & Your Perineum

You may or may not have ever heard the term "muscle memory" before and if you haven't and you're pregnant now is the time to get familiar with it. The dictionary defines muscle memory as "the ability to repeat a specific muscular movement with improved efficiency and accuracy that is acquired through practice and repetition." What this means is when you do something over and over again with your muscles it eventually becomes second nature for them. You essentially don't even have to think about what to do; you just start and your body just does it.

The idea of muscle memory and your perineum is an important one. The perineum is the section of tissue between your vaginal opening and your anus. That is the area that has to soften and stretch when it's time to push the baby out. You want this area to do so as easily as possible to avoid tearing. Now, there is no way to guarantee you won't tear. The best you can do is do what you can to avoid it. This can potentially help reduce the chance of an episiotomy or lessen the degree as to which they have to do it. We may not be able to guarantee an outcome but we sure as hell can try! There are a couple ways to work on preparing the perineum which I'll explain in just a moment. Pick whichever is most comfortable for you and you can always do both.

One technique is called the perineal massage. This is a technique where you essential massage and stretch the vaginal opening pressing down into the perineum. Basically it's like stretching the vaginal opening at the bottom. You can do it yourself with your thumbs or if you're comfortable have your partner help you. You will want some type of vegetable oil like coconut oil to help your fingers glide over the skin more easily. You want to start at the bottom the opening, press down as you slowly take your thumbs and glide them up the sides of the opening and back down. You will do this while applying pressure. Don't put too much pressure too soon as you don't want to hurt yourself. you should gradually work up to more pressure. Typically you would start this about 4-6 weeks prior to delivery but no sooner. If you check out Mama Natural she has a great blog post about it with animated GIF's that I won't even try to recreate! She also has some great additional information that I encourage you to read.

The other technique is very simple. Take a warm compress and hold it up against your perineum. You can use a warm wet cloth or any other form of a warm compress you are comfortable using. The reason this is so effective is it signals you muscles and your mind to relax. That is what you want during delivery. You want to relax. You want your body to relax; especially the perineum and you want your mind to relax. This can be a more effective tool for delivery because this is really the muscle memory we are talking about. You should do this a few times a week about 4-6 weeks leading up to delivery.

Your third option is to combine the two techniques. You can apply the warm compress for a bit and then try the perineal massage. It may be slightly easier to do the massage after the warm compress. Now I have to imagine the perineal massage offers some muscle memory as well in regards to stretching but It's not the most comfortable thing to do. It's also difficult to get into a position where you can reach your lady parts especially when you're only 4 weeks out from your due date. This is usually why you may opt to have your partner help you but that has it's own set of awkwardness you'll have to work through.

At the end of the day you're just trying to get your body to "remember"; cue muscle memory when you're delivery your baby! I would encourage you to put in your birth plan if you want a warm compress or perineal massage or both during pushing. You're going to want to take advantage of all of the tools you've got in your tool belt! Don't worry you can also ask your doula to remember for you and to remind you during labor to ask for these during pushing.

Oxytocin vs Adrenaline in Labor

Oxytocin is a hormone released by the pituitary gland that causes increased contraction of the uterus during labor and stimulates the ejection of milk into the ducts of the breasts. It also is responsible for relationships and bonding. Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, especially in conditions of stress, increasing rates of blood circulation, breathing, and carbohydrate metabolism and preparing muscles for exertion.

If oxytocin is the "hormone of love" and adrenaline is the "fight or flight" hormone it only makes sense that when a woman is in labor she needs to feel loved, cared for and safe. Feeling stressed and scared is exactly what she doesn't need. That is one of the major reasons labor slows down or can completely stop for a woman. That is when then care providers want to start using synthetic forms of oxytocin like Pitocin.

Why do they want to augment labor with Pitocin? Well, there are a variety of reasons that I can't begin to speculate on however mostly it's because once labor starts they want to keep it going to make sure mama and baby are safe. Plus, depending on if the water has broken or not that leads to them putting labor on a clock . That's why I always suggest laboring at home as long as possible before going in if you're having a hospital or birth center birth. However if your water breaks while at home please call your care provider. The reason I suggest laboring at home is because this is where you feel most comfortable! If you feel more comfortable in a hospital setting then by all means go in  and if your water has broken and your provider wants you to go to the hospital that is your call to make. There is no right or wrong answer only preferences. Do what is most comfortable for YOU!

I won't go into a lot of detail in this post on Pitocin, I'll save that for another time but the only downside to this is depending on the original birth plan this can cause a woman to become more scared and stressed which well, you know what can happen next. Slow labor progression means they want to up the Pitocin. How can we avoid that? Hire me as your doula! Seriously though, that is what a doula does. She will keep you calm, focused, and relaxed. Our job is to support you in feeling safe, loved and relaxed. If you have concerns we will help educate you so feel empowered to speak up for yourself. If you need a little encouragement to speak up there is always time to take 10 minutes to discuss your options. Movement and the comfort techniques really are the best treatment for a stalled labor. There are many things a doula can do to help ease you back into a more relaxed state. There are positions to get in and different movements to do to help encourage your body to open and expand. The calmer you are the more open your body becomes.

Utilizing touch, breathing and massage we can help your body to relax in between contractions. We can use positive affirmations and mantras to help keep you connected to the birth you desire. All of this will help coax the oxytocin to flow more freely which is what we want. We want the love hormone flowing!!

Remember, adrenaline is not what we want in labor. To practice the next time you're feeling stressed or anxious take a few deep breathes. Have your partner give you a foot massage. Take a bath and close your eyes and breathe. Remember what this feels like to breathe in the calm. Come up with positive affirmations and mantras to take into labor with you. Write them down, or print them out. Make your birth room as comfortable as you can. The more comfortable you are the more easily the oxytocin will flow and will keep the adrenaline at bay. And of course, pick up the phone or send an email to hire a doula! If you're in the San Diego area I would love to support you!

Breastfeeding Basics

Whether you're a new mom or you're doing it again breastfeeding can be and often is challenging but it's also a really cool and rewarding experience. I wanted to share with you what I like to call, Breastfeeding Basics, to help you on this journey you're about to embark on. I'm not going to sugar coat it for you...breastfeeding is hard! My hope is this article helps answer some questions and maybe give you a few tips & tricks your an use along the way. I'll also give you a few resources I used that were really helpful over the last two years.

Deciding to breastfeed your child is a big commitment and I commend you for embarking on this journey. It isn't for everyone; some women choose to not breastfeed and some can't and that's ok! I'm here to support you no matter what you decide or are forced to choose. This participial article however will be focused only on breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Basics: Tools of the Trade

  • My Brest Friend is literally your best friend! Especially in the early days...probably first 3 months. This thing saved my life! I tried to use a Boppy but that pillow is not for breastfeeding. Propping up a baby sure but not breastfeeding. I couldn't make it work. The thing to remember when using any assistance while feeding is to bring baby to the breast. Don't haunch over to feed your little one. Your back will thank me!
  • Having a breastfeeding station is another life saver. I recommend setting up one in any room you might nurse in; or have a basketwith a handle like the one shown. I went this route because it was cost effective and I had a small apartment. If I had an upstairs situation I'd have one upstairs and one downstairs. Here's what you want in each station:
    • Nipple Balm is a must have! Trust me, when your nipples feel like they might fall off you're going to want to lather them up. I loved the Honest brand because it was safe to use while feeding. You're own breastmilk is perfect though if your nipples start to crack or bleed. They will heal right up! I like the balm more for prevention.
    • When breastfeeding you have to stay hydrated so a water bottle like this Hydro Flask is a must have. I didn't have this particular one when I was a new mom but I have it now and I love it! It comes in different colors and sizes. The best part, it's sturdy and keeps my water cold!
    • Burp cloths are a good idea to keep handy or even a receiving blanket. That way when you go to burp your little one you don't end up with a mess! If you're going the organic route you might want to try these Burt's Bees Burp Cloths. They're really cute and get great reviews! I unfortunately didn't have as cute of ones but if there's a baby #2 you can bet I'll be getting these for sure!
    • Muslin cloths are great to have around if you have guest coming by and maybe you're shy or they are uncomfortable. I preferred to not cover at all  and only used this method a few times but it was nice to have a muslin close by just in case and they are super breathable which was nice on warmer days. Plus if you have a big mess after a burp some time and your burp cloth isn't enough it's nice to have one of these within arms reach. I loved the aden + anais silky soft swaddle 3 pack , pebble shibori" target="_blank">aden & anais because they are so soft but you can get any muslin of your choosing.
    • Snacks! You are going to want easy to eat snacks. Things ideally you can eat one handed. Think granola bars, PB&J bars or sandwiches cut in half, nuts and pre-cut fruit. Really as long as you can eat it with one hand that's what you want. If you don't have time to prepare snacks that's where granola bars and other bar like snacks come in really handy.

Breastfeeding Basics: Tips, Tricks & Basic Info

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) & World Health Organization (WHO) recommend breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months. This means no additional foods except for vitamin D. Babies should continue to nurse with the addition of solids, if the family chooses, until age 1 and beyond. Really, as long as it's wanted by both mama and baby keep on nursing!
  • Take it one feed at a time! I wasn't kidding when I said that breastfeeding is hard! Much harder than I expected. I didn't have any issues with latch or supply or any other common hurdles and it was still hard. There were many days I wanted to give up but I just kept remembering something I had read in my research..."Never quit on a bad day!" I think that saved my breastfeeding journey more than a dozen times...easy.
  • It hurts at first. Keep ice packs in the freezer, keep your nipple balm handy and you will get through it. If you end up with warm spots on your breast you may have a clogged duct. Try to nurse from that breast as much as you can and massage it. If it doesn't get better you risk mastitis. That will be hot, red in the area and you could have a fever. You again can try nursing like crazy. Letting your breast hang while nursing can help too but don't wait too long before speaking to your medical provider. If you end up on antibiotics just take a good probiotic while on it.
  • Don't wait until it's too late to introduce a bottle. I don't mean you have to bottle feed. I simply mean get your little one used to a bottle. I'd say if your supply is good and nursing is going well at around 4-5 weeks you can try a bottle of pumped milk. Go slow and do it when baby is already well fed. You want it to be enjoyable for baby not stressful. The reason I recommend this is I was so afraid of nipple confusion I waited too long and my son never took a bottle. I also didn't do it during the calmest of times. Don't do what I did! Now, if you know you never want your little one to take a bottle then skip this but in case you might I'd give it a try. Having Daddy or someone else who can help is a game changer I'm sure!
  • Don't start pumping until the 4-5 week mark and don't pump a lot. If you have to start pumping a lot because of work or whatever reason just know you will increase your supply. Not necessarily a bad thing but can cause oversupply which can be hard for your baby if you have a strong let down. The only good news of an oversupply is you can get a nice stash going if your baby takes a bottle. Your supply won't regulate until closer to 6 months so just keep that in mind.
  • Keep disposable or reusable nipple pads on you at all times until at least 6 months. your boobs leak a lot! Get whatever brand fits your needs best. I preferred the convenience of disposable ones but many people opt for reusable.
  • Invest in nursing bras or nursing tanks/tops. In the beginning you may just be topless. It's definitely more convenient especially during cluster feeds! Hah but not everyone is up for that. Target has some great nursing bras and tanks and they are really comfortable! More and more companies are popping up though making really cute tops and dresses perfect for nursing. I highly recommend getting a few if you will be out a lot. They are worth every penny and you can always pass them on or sell them once you're done!
  • If you are really engorged and baby is having a hard time latching I'd recommend hadn't expressing a little milk into a burp cloth or muslin blanket. This will soften the nipple and surrounding area for your little one to latch onto.
  • If you have a fast let down and it chokes your baby let down into a burp cloth or muslin and then offer to baby as it slows. The last thing we want is a angry baby at the breast! It's no fun!
  • In the beginning you will get super engorged! It's ok just hand express some if it's in between feedings. Just enough to be comfortable.  You want your body to learn how much milk you need. That's why I recommend not pumping for at least 4-5 weeks even though it can take up to 6 months for your body to even out your supply.
  • Surround yourself with those who support you and lift you up! Especially if you have a goal of nursing to a year or beyond. If you don't have a good support network or even if you do reach out to your local La Leche League group and invest in The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding! I loved that book and it helped me on more than one occasion.
  • I'm here for you! That's right, whether you're in San Diego or surrounding city or you're across the country I'm here to support you! I know the struggles and I nursed my son for just shy of 2 years! We're currently weaning and he turns 2 in 19 days. I want you to reach your goal for breastfeeding if you have one. I'll do all I can to support and lift you up! And, I'll also support you if you decide, on a good day, that you're done! It's your body, your family and you have to do what is best for you. My job is to offer you non-judgemental support and that's just what you'll get!

If you need me during your breastfeeding journey or have questions before you start please comment below or go to the Contact Us page for more ways to reach me!

Happy Breastfeeding Mamas!

What is a doula & why hire one?

I figured it's only fitting for my first post to talk about what is a doula and why should you even hire one? Not everyone knows what a doula is or what they do so it's important  to clarify so expectant parents can make educated decisions. What is a doula? defines a doula as "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth"

Doula is of Greek origin and translates to “a female servant to a woman”. Here, in the US,  doula is a woman who supports and serves another woman through her pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

So, why hire a doula? You hire a doula because you want someone there who can help reduce fear and instill strength in you at the exact right moment. You want someone who gives you the space to feel vulnerable and let's you just be. Someone who supports you no matter what choices you make. Someone who will educate you on all of your options so you can make the best decisions for your family. And, you want someone there who is there for you on this most sacred journey completely judgement free.

When I was pregnant with my son I knew I wanted a doula. I didn't know much about doula's at the time other than they helped mom's and partners during labor so I started doing research. In all the books I read they all recommend hiring a doula as a way for support that was unbiased. You don't realize how much your friends and families biases affect you. It was such an amazing feeling to have someone I could go to to ask questions from and get just the facts and not their personal bias. I know my friends and family meant well but it can be really confusing having so many different opinions. Add in social media and its' even more so. Having a doula made me feel confident and empowered in my choices and supported no matter what. I want to offer that same support to my clients.
