What is a doula & why hire one?

I figured it's only fitting for my first post to talk about what is a doula and why should you even hire one? Not everyone knows what a doula is or what they do so it's important  to clarify so expectant parents can make educated decisions. What is a doula?

Merriam-Webster.com defines a doula as "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth"

Doula is of Greek origin and translates to “a female servant to a woman”. Here, in the US,  doula is a woman who supports and serves another woman through her pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

So, why hire a doula? You hire a doula because you want someone there who can help reduce fear and instill strength in you at the exact right moment. You want someone who gives you the space to feel vulnerable and let's you just be. Someone who supports you no matter what choices you make. Someone who will educate you on all of your options so you can make the best decisions for your family. And, you want someone there who is there for you on this most sacred journey completely judgement free.

When I was pregnant with my son I knew I wanted a doula. I didn't know much about doula's at the time other than they helped mom's and partners during labor so I started doing research. In all the books I read they all recommend hiring a doula as a way for support that was unbiased. You don't realize how much your friends and families biases affect you. It was such an amazing feeling to have someone I could go to to ask questions from and get just the facts and not their personal bias. I know my friends and family meant well but it can be really confusing having so many different opinions. Add in social media and its' even more so. Having a doula made me feel confident and empowered in my choices and supported no matter what. I want to offer that same support to my clients.
